I took the Plunge

I have been wading in the shallow end of the pool... not ready to do dive into the improv... but I took the plunge this morning (because I couldn't procrastinate any longer)!

I was transported back to my Sandi Cummings class. I really was enjoying the process. And all of a sudden it was past time to get ready for work! I debated on skipping a shower... but you will be glad to know that I stepped away from the machine and got myself out the door! The shower couldn't wait... and the block had to. But it will be in the mail tomorrow!!!

IMPROV!

Back when I was little I used to make friendship bracelets out of embroidery floss. Everytime I would go to the store I would pick out my favorite colors. Turquoise, Yellow, Hot Pink, and Red. Over the years this color combo was bumped from my 'Favroites' list, however as of late it's been making a come back.

 I was super excited when Erika told us the color combo for her blocks would be teal, yellow, and pink! I quickly searched through my stash and pulled a few scraps that matched the swatches she sent.

As with the other blocks, I had to throw in some of my own prints. See my little flamingo? I thought he would be a fun addition. I also used a pink 'urchin' strike-off that didn't make the final cut for the fabic collection but was a perfect match here.

This bee is SO FUN!  I have an absolute blast making the blocks each month. I can't wait to see what's up for next month!

Erika's Block

Hi Everyone...I just finished up Erika's block and had so much fun making it! I posted about her block and my other recently received blocks on my blog today...things are coming together!

I just loved making this block for you Erika...it was so refreshing to sew without a pattern...I'm thinking I should make myself do that at least once a week...it's such a great help for the creative process!

Here's my quilt so far...I had planned this to be a 16 block quilt all along, and with several of you sending an extra block I should just have to make two...so thanks so much! I really want to do a fun border for this quilt...the wheels are turning, but I haven't decided anything for sure yet.

bumped out of the nest.

I finished Erika's improve June block and will be putting it in the mail this afternoon.  The improv proved a challenge for me because I am one of those a-type girls who uses a pattern, cuts carefully after measuring a dozen times, and I jump off with a plan ... you know the type.  But this month's block pushed me out of my comfort zone.  And Erika. I want to give you a great big thank you!  Thank you for letting me play with your fun fabrics and create something unique for your quilt!  It was so much fun to see how your fabrics evolved into a block.  I can hardly wait to see the others!

It's hip to be square.

Here's my (really behind) block for Amy. Is it weird that I just wanted to keep adding and adding and adding to this block? And then I realized it would get big really fast and pretty soon be just like putting borders on a quilt over, and over, and over, and over. Then I decided I'd stick to the 12½".

Amy's Blocks

Yes, I know it's almost mid June, but better late than sorry!  I loved the fun colors and fabrics from Amy! 

And I love piecing log cabins.

The red block is 12 inch. 

It looks like the same size, but this is a 6 inch block. 

They don't look like they belong in the same quilt, but I'm hoping once they join all your lovely blocks, they will make perfect sense. 

Erika's wonderful bundle of fabrics just arrived in my mailbox last week and I can't wait to get started.

Late Blocks for Amy

Still catching up, but I finished these today and they are on the way to Amy for her squares quilt!


And I got totally obsessed making these.... I am going to have to make a quilt like this for myself one day! I used almost every little bit she sent, I just kept making blocks until it was gone.  I can't wait to see this one all put together!

Playing Catch-up

Hi friends! Emily here. Or Crazy Old Lady as I'm known best. ;o)

 I've been a busy bee finishing up my [late] blocks.

First up, Sherri's blocks.

I have to admit, at first I was super excited about these blocks. But once I had to start using math to figure them out to the right size the wheels in my brain seized up. After I came too I had the tons fun piecing them together. One of them is a variation of one of my patterns. Betcha' can't guess which one!?  :o)

Since Sherri's blocks are already a month late I also had to hurry and get Amy's done.

I kinda got carried away with these. Once I started it was too fun to stop and I vowed to use every piece of fabric she sent. I added a few from the stash too. I loved making these blocks and see a similar quilt in my future very soon.

Ok gals, I promise to try and get my blocks done on time from now on! :o)

Improv Blocks for June

Hello friends!

I am so slow getting myself out the door this month.  My grandpa got sick at the very end of May and passed away last weekend.  We are all happy he is with his sweetheart and so glad he is out of his sick body.  But I'm late.  So sorry.

I'm loving pink, turquoise, and yellow right now.  And apparently I kind of have a thing for blender prints..... because everything I have in these colors is either tone on tone or tone on white, smallish prints. HA! I'm sending each of you a little bundle, with a bit of Kona snow, to make me an improv block

 I Need Nice Things

 I don't much care what size they are.  I am going to put these twelve together to make a throw size quilt for myself, so at least 12 or 14 inches in one direction.  I don't care if they are square or rectangle.  I'm sure they'll all go together in the end with a little improv sashing if need be.

The only thing I ask is that the lines are either horizontal or vertical to keep things consistent. So, no wonky blocks.... well, not too wonky anyway. :)

What size quilt block do you want your bee partners to make? (Give finished and unfinished measurements, just to be sure.)  I don't care what size the finished block is, rectangle or square, but on the bigger side... 12-14 ish inches in at least one direction.

Can your partners use any of his/her own stash fabric to use in your quilt block? If so, are there any limitations?   Yes!  As long as it fits in with the overall color sheme, and is a blender type print or a solid, feel free to add something from your own stash. 

Does your partners have to use at least a little bit of every fabric you send or can your partners decide? You decide, but I'd love to have at least one pink, yellow, and blue in each block.  And please use or send back all of this pink one.  It was a gift from my friend Krista (Poppyprint) and it is a handdyed and stamped fabric.  She prints her own fabric from poppy seed pods that grow in her garden.  It's a special one, but I only had a little bit left.  So if you don't use it, please send that one back. :) 

Do you have a general theme or is it up to your partners to decide? Are there any specific themes that you do NOT want in your quilt block? Likes/dislikes?  General theme is improv blocks, I do ask that there aren't any diagonal lines in the blocks, all horizontal or vertical seams please.

If your partners are super motivated and are able to make two blocks out of the fabric you send, would you accept more than one block from your partners? Yes! Or just keep adding to the first block and make it a little bigger.  Either one is fine with me.

 
Do you want your partners to return any leftover larger size scraps to you when they return the completed blocks or can they keep them for their own scrap stash? If there is something you absolutely love feel free to keep it, but if you don't think you'll use it send it back and I'll use the scraps to help me sash the blocks together.  

I'm really excited to see what comes back, and I can't wait to get this all put together!  I think it's going to be really fun, and totally different than anything I've done before.  Thank you all for helping me make this idea come to life!

Amy's Block

My block actually went out in the mail yesterday... and I don't know why it took me so long to make it.

I was having a whole lot of fun with this block and didn't want to stop. I have a small one made also...

but I had a little issue with my eyes/ruler... and I need a redo.

I might just make 4 of the small blocks since they are bonus blocks anyway!

I loved making it... and really love seeing every one else's version of the block too!
